VACATION MODE: THE PAUSE THAT REFUELS YOU

Two young boys in vacation are swimming in a resort pool with colorful umbrellas in the background

We often glorify hustle, consistency, and grinding through routines—and while those values matter deeply, we sometimes forget the quiet power of pause. A vacation isn’t just a break from work or a chance to escape. At its best, it’s a moment to reset, reconnect, and remember what really matters.

I just returned from a two-week vacation with my family. And while it included laughter, great food, new places, and lots of swimming, the real value wasn’t in the itinerary—it was in the mindset shift. A chance to see life from a different lens. A chance to slow down.

In this blog post, I want to reflect on what vacation mode taught me—and how we can carry its wisdom into everyday life.

The Real Meaning of “Vacation”

Let’s start with the word itself.

Vacation comes from the Latin vacatio, which means “freedom,” “being empty,” “released from duty.” That definition alone changed how I see it.

Because it’s not about luxury destinations or jam-packed schedules. It’s about freedom. Emotional, mental, and even spiritual space to step out of our usual roles and reconnect with something deeper: our presence.

During those two weeks, I wasn’t a doctor on call or a podcast host thinking of next week’s topic. I was just there—as a dad, as a husband, as a human being. Free from rushing. Free from doing. And in that freedom, I rediscovered things I didn’t even know I was missing.

What Slowing Down Reminded Me

We often underestimate what stillness can teach us. Here’s what those two weeks reminded me:

1. Presence is a Choice

Being physically there is easy. But being mentally and emotionally present? That takes work. It takes putting down the phone, stepping out of your head, and giving someone your full attention.

Some of our best family moments weren’t planned—they simply happened when we were fully with each other.

2. Joy Doesn’t Need an Agenda

The biggest laughs didn’t come during fancy outings. They came during beach walks, messy watermelon slices, and lazy afternoons. When the schedule loosened, joy expanded. It was a good reminder that happiness lives in the unscripted.

3. Time Feels Both Slower and More Precious

Something strange happens on vacation. Time seems to slow down… but you also become painfully aware of how fast your kids are growing. One day they’re splashing in the shallow end, and the next, they’re leaping off a wooden deck into deeper waters.

These full-family summers? They’re limited. And realizing that brought me back to one of the most powerful reminders from a previous podcast episode: life is short—make it count.

4. Rest Isn’t Laziness. It’s Refueling.

Did I stick to my training plan? No. Did I eat too much? Definitely. Did I feel a little guilty about it at times? Yes. But I also realized: I needed it.

My body needed rest.

My mind needed quiet.

My heart needed connection.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do… is pause.

You Don’t Have to Travel to Feel This

One of the biggest lessons I took from this trip is this: we don’t need a plane ticket or a beach resort to access what vacation gives us.

Yes, it helps. Yes, it’s easier to slow down when your calendar is clear. But the essence of vacation—presence, stillness, connection—can be created on a regular Tuesday if we’re intentional enough.

The mindset is what matters. And we can all tap into that, wherever we are.

How to Bring Vacation Mode Into Everyday Life

Let’s make this practical. Here’s how you can carry the spirit of vacation into your day-to-day life:

Schedule a “Micro-Vacation” Each Week

Block off one hour—or even 30 minutes—where you disconnect completely. No emails. No to-dos. Just presence. Whether that’s a walk, reading time, or family dinner, protect it like it’s a flight you can’t miss.

Unplug Intentionally

Try choosing one block of time each day (e.g., dinner time or bedtime) where your phone is completely away. No distractions. Just human-to-human connection.

Create Joy Without Planning

Leave some unstructured space in your weekends. Don’t fill every hour. Let joy surprise you. Play, wander, laugh freely.

Reflect on What Matters Most

Ask yourself regularly:

• What moments from this week brought me the most peace or connection?

• Am I rushing through life, or am I truly here for it?

Even 60 seconds of reflection can realign your day.

Embrace the Pause Without Guilt

Rest is not a reward. It’s a requirement. Don’t let guilt steal the benefits of your break. The more we honor rest, the more energy we bring back to our work, goals, and relationships.

Final Thoughts

As I return to my regular routine—work, training, life—I feel different. Not because I had an extraordinary vacation. But because I remembered something ordinary that I had forgotten:

Presence is powerful.

Stillness is healing.

And life’s most meaningful moments are often the quiet ones we miss when we’re too busy achieving.

We don’t need to escape life to find joy.

Sometimes we just need to pause long enough to see it.
